Abstract

Understanding the brittleness of rock has a crucial importance in rock engineering applications such as the mechanical excavation of rock. In this study, numerical modeling of a punch penetration test is performed using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The Peak Strength Index (PSI) as a function of the brittleness index was calculated using the axial load and a penetration graph obtained from numerical models. In the first step, the numerical model was verified by experimental results. The results obtained from the numerical modeling showed a good agreement with those obtained from the experimental tests. The propagation path was also simulated using Voronoi meshing. The fracture was created under the indenter in the first step, and then

Abstract

There is a direct relationship between the efficiency of mechanized excavation in hard rocks and that of disc cutters. Disc cutter wear is an important effective factor involved in the functionality of tunnel boring machines. Replacement of disc cutters is a time-consuming and costly activity that can significantly reduce the TBM utilization and advance rate, and has a major effect on the total time and cost of the tunneling projects. When these machines bore through hard rocks, the cutter wear considerably affects the excavation process. To evaluate the performance of the cutters, first, it is essential to figure out how they operate the rock cutting mechanism; secondly, it is important to identify the key factors that cause the wear. In t

Abstract

Accurate estimation of rock cuttability is crucial for selecting and design of mechanical excavators in mining and civil engineering practices. This study is to introduce the intact rock cuttability index (IRCI) using three simple and easily accessed intact rock microscale parameters. Assuming that an intact rock consists of mineral grains (materials), cement or matrix and pores, three parameters of rock texture coefficient (TC), Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI), and porosity were selected to be included in IRCI equation. Small-scale rock cutting tests with a simple chisel pick were conducted on very low to medium strength rock specimens to calculate the specific energy (SE) as an indicator of rock cuttability. Accordingly, the correlations b

Abstract

Rock cuttability always has been recognized as one of the most effective parameters in selection and design of cutting tools and prediction performance of mechanical excavator machines. Field, experimental and theoretical methods have been applied into determination of rock cuttability. In this study, the theoretical model of rock cutting forces estimation presented for V-shape disc cutters was modified taking into account the influence of cutter edge radius. In order to validate the proposed model, full-scale rock cutting test data presented by Balci and Tumac (2012) and t-test with 99% interval confidence have been implemented. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between estimated rock cutting forces and real data, and s

Abstract

Brittleness and modulus of toughness are among the most important inherent properties of rock, which are determinative for rock excavation operations. In this study, mechanical properties of granite, granodiorite, dolomite, hornfels and marble were studied in the area of Glass water supply tunnel near the Naghadeh city (NW Iran). The stress-strain curve area and rocks strength properties were applied to calculate 13 brittleness indices and modulus of toughness. Statistic relationships between brittleness indices and toughness of modulus suggest strong correlation between B3 brittleness index (R2= 0.83 and RMSE= 5.46 coefficients) and B4 brittleness index (R2= 0.83 and RMSE= 3.85) respectively with modulus of toughness. The statistical relat

Journal PapersTunnelling and Underground Space Technology , Volume 88 , 2019 June 1, {Pages 73-86 }

Abstract

An attempt was made to examine the relationship between various TBM operational factors, its performance, and muck geometry during the excavation of a short geologically uniform section of Golab II water transfer tunnel. A database based on nine field testing data derived from machine operating and performance parameters along with muck shape and size was formed. Subsequently, it was used for analyzing the correlation among variables. The analysis results point out that there is a strong inverse correlation between specific energy (SE), an indicator parameter of rock cutting efficiency, and three muck size indicators including: coarseness index (CI), mean particle size, and absolute grain size (last one is the correlation with R 2= 0.93). Abstract

Stope layout designing and production scheduling are main phases to determine the profitability of an underground mining project. These are mainly related to the output of one phase, which has a significant impact on generating of the next phase. Individual optimization of these two phases results only in a local optimal solution. To date, the integrated optimization of these phases has been carried out to maximize net present value (NPV). In this paper, a multi-objective integer programming model (MOIP) was developed to optimize this integrated problem in a sublevel stoping operation. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) was incorporated to solve the objective functions. The Pareto front generated by NSGA-II showed good co

Abstract

Truck-Shovel fleet, as the most common transportation system in open-pit mines, has a significant part of mining costs, for which optimal management can lead to substantial cost reductions. Among the available dispatch mathematical models, the multi-stage approach is well suited for allocating trucks to respected shovels in a dynamic dispatching program. However, with this kind of modeling sequencing of the allocated trucks is not possible though it is important to find out the best solution so that getting the minimum accrued cost. To comply with the shortcoming of the traditional model, in this paper, a new hybrid model is developed and applied in Copper Mine of Iran, in which for each truck an allocation matrix is considered as input to

Abstract

Chip geometry can play a crucial role in understanding the rock cutting efficiency in mechanical excavation. In this study, the shape and size distribution of chips produced in laboratory scale rock cutting tests and their relationship with cutting geometry and rock cuttability were analyzed. For this purpose, a series of small-scale linear rock cutting tests (SSLRCT) were carried out with a simple chisel tool in unrelieved mode at cutting depth of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm to determine the cuttability of four rock types (sandstone, marl, salt, and coal) and two synthetic (dental plaster and concrete) specimens. The size distribution of all cuttings collected from the grooves in different samples was determined by sieve analysis. The results were u

Abstract

As the demand for mineral resources increases, the need to underground mining is promoted and due to technological advances, deeper deposits with lower grade mineralization are becoming valuable. In underground operations, it is common practice that each area is planned individually. As these techniques often ignore how designing and planning one section can affect other sections,, optimum individual planning fails to provide an overall optimum design. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in simultaneous optimization that may assist with integrating different areas of the mine planning process and providing more profitable mines plans. In this paper, a mathematical IP model has been developed that simultaneously optimizes stop

Abstract

One of the most important results of the linear rock cutting process is the accurate estimation of the cutting forces applied to the disc cutter which can be a prelude to the development of models for predicting the performance of all tunnel boring machines (TBM). In this study, numerical modeling of rock cutting process by a disc cutter using finite element code ABAQUS has been implemented. For model validation, the results of the linear cutting machine tests (LCM) by Previous researchers have been applied. After solving the proposed model, the forces on the disc were calculated in three directions of the rock cutting model and the mean of each force was calculated by a code that was developed in MATLAB software. Comparison of laboratory r

Abstract

Stope layout and production scheduling are two main areas of underground mine planning that have a close relationship with each other such a way that optimization results of each of them have important effects on the other one. Hence, separately optimization of these two areas cannot guarantee the true optimum. Because, in isolated optimization approach often ignores the effects of different planning areas on each other, this is not able to manage issues among different areas. To tackle this problem, simultaneous optimization approaches are developed in recent years which simultaneously optimize the different areas of the mine planning process and lead to more profitable mine plans. In the present research, a mathematical IP model has been

Abstract

From the viewpoint of safety in underground coal mining, the most suitable mining panel is the one with minimum geological structures, the right machinery, and equipment selection, trained employee, and proficient stope management. Since the ground parameters are uncontrollable and inherent uncertainties exist, a high percent of risk will usually accompany the underground coal mining activities. The main purpose of this study is to present a geological–geotechnical risk assessment model for identification of high risk-prone areas in underground coal mines using an integrated GIS-geostatistics system. Tabas as the first mechanized and largest underground coal mine in Iran was selected as a case study in this study. Gas conte

Abstract

Methane gas emission, accumulation, and explosion are the most important risk factors in underground coal mines. Hence, having a knowledge of methane gas emission potential in underground coal mines is of crucial importance in preventing the explosion risk, loss of life, and property, and providing miners' safety. The purpose of this work is to provide the prediction maps for the C 1, C 2, and B 2 coal seams gas contents, and to identify high gas content panels in the Parvadeh No. 1, Tabas coal mine. For this, the data collected from exploratory boreholes is put into geostatistical analysis in ArcGIS in order to estimate the coal seams gas content in unsampled points using the kriging estimation method. Reviewing the gas content maps has re

Abstract

A successful and favorable explosion not only causes a proper rock fragmentation, but also decreases the unfavorable and unwanted environmental issues caused by explosion such as ground vibration, flyrock, air-overpressure and back-break. Therefore, anticipation and optimization of these issues produced by blasting operations is significant. In this study, an attempt has been made to design the effective factors on Tajareh limestone mine explosion [i.e., burden, blast-hole, spacing, hole length, sub-drilling, stemming, powder factor, charge in each delay and Geological Strength Index (GSI)] in order to reduce improper fragmentation and flyrock. Since the experimental methods are not suitable in terms of accuracy, using artifici

Abstract

Design, selection and performance prediction of excavators are very delicate for project planning and cost estimation in mechanical mining and mechanized tunneling. Rock cuttability assessment in mechanized excavation includes investigation of rock mechanical behavior and rock-cutting tool interaction. Use of laboratory scale rock cutting tests is the most reliable method for accurate assessment of rock-tool interactive behavior in a situation close to its actual field condition. In this study, small scale linear cutting test was used for evaluating the rock cuttability and its relationship with rock mechanical parameters. To perform this action, rock samples of Upper-red sandstone were prepared for rock physical and mechanical characteriza

Abstract

This study uses multiple indicator kriging estimator based on assayed data acquired from 48 exploration boreholes inTabas coal mine in order to predict gas content of coal seams. Results of the estimated block models showed that approximately 12% of the total area has the gas content of less than 5 (m3/ton)(Low risk), 11% has 5-10 (m3/ton)(Medium Risk) and 15% has 10-15 (m3/ton)(High Risk), while about 62% of total area has the gas content of more than 15 (m3/ton) which is of a high risk. Therefore, according to the experiences from mined panels, in the zones with lower to median gasification risk, it is possible to keep the mining operation running with management and optimization of the ventilation system. However, in the zones with highe
